Rhinoplasty Recovery: A Week-by-Week Guide

Rhinoplasty Recovery: A Week-by-Week Guide

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. Whether performed for aesthetic improvement or functional correction, understanding the recovery process is essential for managing expectations and achieving the best possible result. Dr. Prasanna Somvanshi, a leading plastic surgeon in Mumbai, provides this detailed week-by-week guide to help patients navigate their rhinoplasty recovery with confidence.

Before Surgery: Setting the Stage

A smooth recovery begins with thorough preparation. During the pre-operative consultation at NH SRCC or SevenHills Hospital, Dr. Prasanna Somvanshi provides detailed instructions including:

  • Discontinuing blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil) at least two weeks before surgery
  • Stopping smoking at least four weeks prior to and after surgery, as smoking impairs healing
  • Arranging for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours
  • Preparing a comfortable recovery space with extra pillows for head elevation
  • Stocking up on soft foods, ice packs, and prescribed medications

Day of Surgery

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anaesthesia and takes one to three hours depending on the complexity. After surgery, a nasal splint is applied to the outside of the nose to support the new shape, and soft internal splints or packing may be placed inside the nostrils. Most patients go home the same day once they are fully awake and stable. You will experience congestion, mild to moderate discomfort, and a feeling of facial pressure.

Week 1: Days 1-7

The first week is the most challenging part of recovery:

  • Days 1-2: Swelling and bruising are at their peak, particularly around the eyes and cheeks. Cold compresses applied to the cheeks (not directly on the nose) help reduce swelling. Pain medication keeps you comfortable. Sleep with your head elevated on two to three pillows to minimise swelling.
  • Days 3-4: Bruising around the eyes may darken before it starts to fade. Nasal congestion persists. You may notice some bloody drainage from the nostrils, which is normal.
  • Days 5-7: The external nasal splint and any internal splints or sutures are removed, usually at a follow-up visit with Dr. Prasanna Somvanshi. This is a significant milestone. Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their nasal shape, even though swelling is still present. Bruising begins to fade noticeably.

Restrictions during Week 1: Avoid blowing your nose, strenuous activity, bending forward, and wearing glasses directly on the nose bridge. Sneeze with your mouth open.

Week 2: Days 8-14

Most patients feel significantly better during the second week:

  • The majority of visible bruising has resolved. Residual bruising can be concealed with makeup if desired.
  • Swelling has reduced considerably, though the tip of the nose remains swollen. This is the phase when most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities.
  • Nasal breathing gradually improves as internal swelling decreases.
  • Sutures, if not already removed, dissolve or are taken out during this period.

Weeks 3-4

By the third and fourth weeks, recovery progresses steadily:

  • External swelling continues to diminish. The nose begins to look more refined, though the tip may still appear slightly rounded or upturned due to residual swelling.
  • Light exercise such as walking and gentle yoga can be resumed, but avoid contact sports and heavy lifting.
  • You can resume wearing glasses with protective padding on the bridge, or use tape to keep frames off the nose.
  • Numbness at the nasal tip is common and gradually resolves over the following months.

Weeks 5-6

At this stage, most patients are well into their return to normal life:

  • Most swelling has resolved, and the nose is beginning to take on its final shape. However, subtle changes continue.
  • Vigorous exercise, swimming, and most sports can be resumed with clearance from Dr. Prasanna Somvanshi.
  • Sun protection is important. Wear sunscreen and a hat when outdoors, as the healing nasal skin is more susceptible to sunburn and hyperpigmentation.

Months 3-6

Patience is key during this phase:

  • Approximately 80 to 90 percent of swelling has resolved. The nasal bridge and sidewalls look close to their final form.
  • The nasal tip, which has the thickest skin and the most soft tissue, continues to refine gradually.
  • Sensation returns to previously numb areas.
  • Scar maturation is underway for open rhinoplasty incisions (the small scar across the columella fades significantly).

One Year and Beyond: The Final Result

The true, final result of rhinoplasty is typically visible at 12 to 18 months after surgery. At this point:

  • All swelling has resolved, including at the nasal tip.
  • The skin has fully re-draped over the reshaped cartilage and bone framework.
  • Scars have matured and are barely perceptible.
  • The nose looks and feels natural, and the result is considered permanent.

Patients with thicker nasal skin may notice that the tip takes slightly longer to reach its final shape compared to those with thin skin. Dr. Prasanna Somvanshi monitors progress through regular follow-up appointments at HN Reliance, Surya Hospital, or his Mumbai clinic to ensure healing is proceeding optimally.
